Still Cutting

I'm still cutting the pieces for the Double Wedding ring quilt, but I'm coming to the end of the cutting. I'm down to cutting the melon part, which is one of the center pieces. I'm going to clear off the kitchen table, and bring down the big cutting mat, and a big ruler, and have my dear wonderful husband cut the big squares for me. He's a very accurate measurer, and I think it would take him no time at all to get the 20 blocks I need. I'm actually going to go ahead and start sewing the rings together this weekend. I figure that the blocks will get done here eventually.

As you can see, sometimes Jasper feels the need to ham it up, and I just have to snap a pic when he gets like that. He was actually begging for a rawhide. Yes, I did go and get him one, because who could resist that sweet Husky face????

We put Fred and Ginger together today. She let him fall off of him 3 times this morning!!! (he was on the move) But he was only able to have 1 fall off this evening. She wasn't feeling the love this evening, and got a little nasty with him. So, Frank got her out before somebody got hurt. Today is 10 days in for Ethel, and 9 days in for Doris. (That is if everybody took) We don't really know how to check for pregnancy, so basically we just wait the 31 days, and see if they are going to give birth. I "think" on Franks next day off, we plan on breeding Betty. That big chocolate beauty is ready.

We got a new record number of eggs today. We got 16!!! And then for the week, we hit a new record number. We got 99 eggs this week!!! (I have the week offset, I chart them Friday through Thursday)

Well, that's all that's going on here!!!!

onto the next project

Now that I've had a couple of days to let the excitement from completing the first of my Christmas gift quilts, I've moved onto cutting out the next quilt project. This one is for my niece Faith. I'm making her a Double Wedding Ring quilt throw. I'm doing throw size for the kids for now, because of my time crunch. I was hoping to make everybody bed size quilts, but that will have to wait. I'll make them bigger quilts once they get a little bit older, and as my skills get better.
I'm trying to use pretty pastel scrap fabric for Faith's quilt. I'm making scrap quilts for everybody, but I know that I can control the color of the scraps that I'm using. So, as I go through my crates of scraps, I'm ironing and picking out the pretty scraps.
I chose the double wedding ring quilt, because other than the fact that I was having a hard time choosing a quilt pattern out of my scrap therapy quilt books, I realized I was going to need the practice making the DW quilt. My oldest nephew is getting married next October, and I plan to make him and his future wife a bed size DW quilt as a wedding gift. (practice makes perfect)
I'm cutting out enough pieces to make 2 DW throw sized quilts. I think it would be great to have an extra made, just in case I need an extra gift!!!
(hey, what crafter doesn't have a back up gift?)

Sunday Sharing

So, lots to share with you guys today. First of all, the quilt is done!!! I have the binding on it and everything!!! I'm getting ready to start on my next scrappy quilt that I'm making for Christmas. These are really fun to make in all honesty. I'm loving it.

So, then, I managed to snap a picture of Martin standing still. I think he's full grown. I guess its about time though since he's 8 months old now. (yeah, time has really flown)

I tried a new recipe. Asparagus wrapped in bacon. It was delicious. Its definitely going to be a repeat recipe. Basically you just take and mix some olive oil, salt and pepper, and gently mix the asparagus in it, and then cut 8-9 pieces of bacon in half, and wrap 3-4 pieces of asparagus in the bacon, and then bake in the oven on 350 for 15-20 min. (or until the bacon is crisp)

The dogs are getting along great!!! We've been having some rain, but thankfully they were having a great day napping.

So, after 19 years, I saw my cousin Brian for the first time. I don't get to see my family very often. In fact, I have only seen one Aunt and Cousin in the last 15 years. My cousin Brian is a truck driver, and it turns out his rout goes through here, so we'll be able to see him more often!!! Hooray!!!

My little nice Faith, who is 4 almost 5, and I took a "selfie" together. I love getting to spend time with her. She's my only niece, but I have 3 nephews.

So, this has been your Sunday share!!!!

Miss Me?

Hello everybody!!! Sorry for the dry spell here this week, BUT its been a crazy week. Monday and Tuesday we were working on getting rabbits bred. We bred Ethel and Doris. The reason we bred Ethel instead of Ginger is we need to make sure that Fred isn't a dry rabbit. We actually did pretty good this time I think. We did Ethel on Monday, we put her in with Fred in the morning, and then 8 or 9 hours later we put her back in with Fred again. We left her in with him for about a half an hour each time. Her and Fred seem to be buddies anyways, which was kind of cute really. They cuddled up together some. (They have been neighbors since we brought them home) Fred fell off of her a total of 4 times.  Then Tuesday morning, we put Doris in with Fred, where he fell off of her twice, but that evening when we put her back in, he only got to fall off once. She was not having it, no matter how hard he tried. He kissed her face, nibbled her ears, and even sat on her head. (that was actually kind of funny) But finally after a half an hour, we went ahead and put her back in her own cage. She promptly took a pee once we put her back in her own cage. I'm hoping that not all of Fred's baby making juice (for lack of a better word) came out.

Then I've been working on house work, cooking, laundry, and quilt making. I'm actually almost finished with my first quilt. I'm working on putting the binding on it now. I'm hoping to have it finished today. I'm putting the binding on using a machine that I'm not completely familiar with. My regular machine is back in the shop again. I'll have pictures of that this week hopefully.

Yesterday for the first time since I've had chickens, I got 15 eggs!!!! That's just downright exciting. I'll be even more excited once my Easter Egg chickens start laying. That should be any time now. Waiting is always the hardest part.  Dot is still in the grow out pen with the chicks. She's starting to look a lot better, just older. I'm planning on keeping everybody in there for now, until I have everybody on layer feed. I have a couple more weeks to go before I can start mixing feed I think. I need to double check the packaging.

Bella and the boys are still doing great. Things could be a little bit better, but its getting there. I've a feeling its going to be winter before she is completely accepted by these two.

Egg Plant Lasagna

Sorry there are no pictures to go with this recipe, but my husband and I had pretty much so demolished this, before I thought to take a pic!!! My husband is diabetic, so its hard to find something that he can fill up on, without having to take a whole bottle of insulin. Well, this recipe fit that bill, and to top it off, it was extremely tasty!!!! So, I guess its almost perfect that post number 201 is a recipe!!! I think I've covered a lot here in the last week or so, farm pictures, recipes, crochet patterns, quilt stuff, and just everything that goes with living the little farm life!!!!

So, on with the recipe!!!!

1 large eggplant, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick width wise
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 lb. ground beef
4 oz. can sliced mushrooms, drained
8 oz. can tomato sauce
6 oz. can tomato paste
1/2 c. water
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
8 oz. container ricotta cheese
1 c. grated parmesan cheese
3 eggs
extra parmesan cheese for the top

Place the eggplant slices in a single layer on a greased baking pan. Brush the tops with olive oil. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until tender; cool. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, over medium heat, brown beef and drain, then stir in mushrooms, tomato sauce, past, water and seasonings. Simmer over medium heat until thickened. In a separate bowl, combine remaining ingredients, and mix well. Coat a 13x9 baking pan with non-stick veg spray. Layer half each of beef mixture, cheese mixture, and eggplant slices. Repeat Layers; top with more parmesan cheese. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 40 min until cooked through, and golden on top. Makes 6 servings.

That's it!!! This is the easiest recipe I've made yet, and plan on making it at least once a month if I can get away with it!!!   I'll have made it twice this month, because I'm making it for the next family gathering.

Christmas Quilting On the Move

So, I've been working on making quilts for Christmas as you guys may remember. Well my sewing machine went down, and I didn't completely realize it, until I was way into the one quilt I was making. (I'm going to have to go through and take all of those blocks apart...that will make a great project while watching television)

Well, this is the first complete quilt top I've completed in a while. Its a horrible picture, I know, but I plan on getting a better picture later on. I'll either take it out and hang it on the clothes line, or get Frank to hold it up for me. This is a star wars quilt, for my youngest nephew. I saw that fabric, and I just knew!!!

This pattern came from my scrap therapy book. I love those books, but this is the first pattern I've actually managed to complete from out of it. I've started a few times, but never got very far. I guess I just wasn't overly motivated. This one has 180 little two inch squares.  I've been cutting them and stashing them for quite a while, so it was great to finally be able to use them!!! (and of course thanks to Mr. Ralph from the Sew in Vac here in town, my sewing machine is running better than ever!!!)

So, that being said, I plan on moving on to my next quilt. I'm going to use this same pattern for my niece Faith. I plan on making a larger quilt for my older nephew Jacob. I plan on making a quilt for my oldest nephew and his soon to be wife, but that's going to be a wedding gift. I'm going to make them a double wedding ring quilt, which I plan on starting on as soon as I get my next two quilts complete.

Hope you guys are having a great weekend so far!!!! Be safe, and enjoy this weather!!!

Fun Chicken Pictures

Hi everybody!!! Just thought I'd share some pics I took this morning of my girls and boys. As you can see those adorable little chicks that I bought/hatched back in the spring are all mostly fully grown now. A few of them have even started laying eggs. It wont be long until they are all laying!!!

I tried to get some pictures of my little Easter Egg pullets and rooster, and of my Tetra Tint pullets and cockerels, but all of the pictures came out blurry, because they just wont stop moving!!! they are fast movers.

Dot seems to be making a full recovery. I'm not sure if I told you all about her or not. She decided to go broody, and had not eaten for several days, and she went broody in a place where she was really hard to get to. So we managed to get her out, and Frank said that she had lost a significant amount of weight. So we put her in the grow out pen, where she would be away from eggs, and maybe the little chicks would be a help. (well they really aren't all that little) We also figured that the starter grower would be a great thing for her to eat. She has really perked back up. She's eating well too. I can't tell if she's gained any weight back yet or not, but I'm also making sure to give her handfuls of layer pellets so that she's getting all of the nutrients she needs. She's starting to get shiny again. Dot is my Dark Brahma. She's about 2 years old now, and is considered a senior chicken. She's one of my original chickens from when we first started. I have 4 of those girls left, and they are pet status. They and the Roosters are the only ones who are going to get to be pets.

Well, that's about it on this end for now!!! Hope you are all enjoying wonderful weather!!!!

New Egg layer Alert and Bootlegger Beans recipe

I have some new Egg layers in the Hen House!!! That's always exciting stuff. I know for a fact though, that this girl, dropped this egg. I'm going to start referring to her as Cinnamon, because she looks like the Sex Link breed known as Cinnamon queen. The father is a Rhode Island Red (Sinatra) and The mother is a White Wyandotte (Maud), and that is according to the charts how a Cinnamon Queen is made.  This will probably be the only one we will get from Maud, since she's an old gal now, and isn't laying as often as she was, AND since she's started laying double yolks.  The thing that surprises me the most, is how much her eggs, resemble the Copper Marans eggs. I just kind of wonder how similar they will taste to those.

We went to a cook out last night, which was a blast. I baked some pies, and made some beans, and randomly different salads. This pie was made from all ready made stuff, because I'm a horrible crust maker, and had so much going on that I didn't have time to make homemade filling. So I just unrolled the crust, and opened up a couple of cans of cherry filling. I did however make the hearts myself using some little cookie cutters that I have.  Even though I love to do from scratch stuff, sometimes, a girl just has to take a little break, and do what they must.

One of the things I made was bootlegger beans. Its something my husband grew up eating, and is an old recipe. I thought that I would share that recipe with you guys, since every time I mention it, peoples reaction is always..."What are Bootlegger Beans???" so Here is the recipe!!! (I'm overdue sharing a new recipe with you all anyways, and this one is surprisingly easy!!)

Ingredients:
3 Slices bacon
1 Chopped Onion (small)
1 Large can pork and beans
1 Tbsp. brown sugar
2 Tbsp. vinegar
2 Tbsp. Ketchup

Directions:
Brown bacon. When bacon is half done, add chopped onion. When onion is slightly browned, pour off most of the grease and add pork and beans. Add the 3 remaining ingredients. Stir well and cover. Simmer at least 30 minutes.

That's it...that is all there is to it, and its surprisingly delicious. In fact when I told Frank I was making beans to take to the bbq we went to last night, he specifically requested these, and honestly, he never ever asks for me to make anything, ever. Usually he just goes along with whatever it is I'm going to make. So, since he asked, I was more than happy to comply.

I hope you all enjoy!!!!

Dogs and Rabbits and Chickens oh my

Hey there, I know I haven't given as many updates as I should have lately on the goings on of the farm here, so I decided that well, I need to update my wonderful readers!!!

As you can see by my picture here, Sam and Bella are getting along greatly!!! Although things aren't always this calm and wonderful. Bella has been doing great getting to go out in the yard with the boys, and has been staying far from the fence line. She is still having to go into the crate at night though. We thought we were going to be ok not putting her in the crate at night, but we were wrong. She was getting up and having potty accidents all over the house.

Well, it looks like we won't have baby bunnies until about October. It would seem we need to let our rabbits hit about 8 months old before we breed them. Or at least that's what I've been told in my Silver Fox rabbit group. Although with the heat, there is a good possibility that Fred is temporarily sterile anyways. I was hoping to have some baby bunnies sooner than that, but good things come to those who wait. Although, looking at Cadburry and Pinkerton size wise, I may go ahead and breed those two next month. I just need to make sure to have a nest box ready for Cadburry. I'm not sure how she will do as a first time mom, but with her being an inside bunny, it will be great to get to watch the babies grow here.

Dot, my senior Dark Brahma hen has gone seriously broody. I've got to get Frank to take the roost bars off of the chicken roost, so that we can get in there and get her out of that back corner where she has decided to take herself. I've been thinking about setting up a broody hen with some eggs to see if they will hatch them, but I don't really have any place to do that. Although, right now, I need to do something about her because I suspect she's not eating or drinking, and its been about 2 or 3 days now. I did not know until recently that senior chickens will go broody so much. I thought Buffy was going to go broody, but she got bored with it really fast, and went on about her own thing.

My chicks that are in the grow out pen are still doing really well. Growing quickly, and eating plenty. It always amazes me how fast they start to grow once they are on the ground and pecking around, and doing chicken stuff.

I'm thinking about setting up the incubator and hatching out a few eggs. I've got hatching fever...lol...mostly I want to hatch some meat birds. It is fun though watching them grow in the shells, and then seeing them burst free from their shells. Its just kind of magic.  I do need to wait though until I have some free coops.

So, that's it, now you are as up to date as I am!!!
Have a great week!!!

Our New addition

Yup, you read that right, our New addition...its not something I bought, or hatched, just a friendly little visitor who is here for the summer. We have a little toad who is living on/under our front porch. I've dubbed him Pierre...I don't know why I'm calling him that, and neither does Frank...I don't even know if he is a he and not a she. It doesn't really matter though, because he's spending the summer eating the bugs that come out at night. Nobody bothers him, not even the dogs, which is awesome.

Since the 4th of July weekend, I decided to do a little grilling. I've got a little stove top thing that goes over top of two burners, and It makes the food looks grilled. (OK, so its not really grilled, its made on a griddle...humor me here) But it did come out pretty good, we had some steak, and some squash and zucchini, that I grilled with the steaks. Then I did baked potatoes (in the microwave) and salad. I'm not really an outside cooker, as you may or may not be able to tell.

Martin is pretty well all grown up. He will be a year old in November....that's just a few months away really. He and Sinatra are still working on working things out between the two of them. They do ok together in there. One of them sleeps on one roost at night, and one is on the other. They don't exactly share, but their happy with the way they do things.

My little chicks are all getting pretty big. My pullets are just weeks away from laying, and all of my chicks are now able to come out of their coops, and into the grow out pin. Its amazing just how fast chickens grow.

You know, I was thinking the other day, about the fact that Chicks come out of the shell able to walk, eat, drink and move around. Other birds, robins and such, have to be fed by momma bird. She has to basically make baby food for them, in order for them to be able to process. Isn't it kind of cool the difference between all of these birds????

And of course, my Sam. Sam is my dog, not my husbands and not ours, but mine. He has claimed me, and I have claimed him. According to Frank, he needs to be wearing a helmet, and that he's not a normal dog. He's just a little different, and spoiled...he did come to us a little different when we brought him home as a puppy. He's smart, and can take care of himself, don't get me wrong, he's just slightly different...lol

I'm hoping that nobody sets off fireworks tonight. I don't mind Fireworks on Fri and Sat nights, I think that tonight however, would be a great night to stop the celebration. I don't know that Bella could take another night of those.

worms, rabbits, chickens, haircuts, and crocheting

So, as you can see by the title of my post, I've got a bit of everything going on!!!
I love taking pictures of stuff, as you can tell, and I'm probably not going to go in the order of the pictures as they are posted, but I'm fairly certain you will be able to figure it out.

Well, my worms are loving the rabbit poo!!! They are eating and reproducing like crazy. I decided that I needed to feed them some fresh compost today though rather than the rabbit poo, so I gave them some Gooseberries that we had picked, and got left sitting a little bit too long. So those got sent through the blender, so that my worms would eat them a bit quicker. I do plan on giving them some more worm poop though this week. I've got to clean my inside bunny cages, so they will be getting worm poo quite soon.

Speaking of Rabbits, there are no baby bunnies to report. It looks like Ginger had a very false pregnancy, and Doris just didn't take. It almost doesn't surprise me about Doris though. She had a really hard labor the other month. I'm kind of glad that she didn't take, because I honestly think she needed the recovery time. We will be rebreeding probably on Monday and Tuesday. I'm hoping that Fred isn't going to be a dud, in the stud department. fingers crossed everybody!!!

My little Leghorn mix Chicks are doing pretty well. Out of the 12, its looking like I have 7 roosters. (Go figure) I'm thinking that there's a good possibility that when I had those Marans roosters, they may have been a bit active. One of my pullets, looks like a Marans, so I plan on holding tight to her to see what she ends up doing for me.

My hair had gotten quite long. It was actually in the middle of my back, and making my head hurt, and it was just so thick and heavy that I was getting migraine headaches from it. So I gave in and went to Walmart and got it cut off. This is actually how I used to keep my hair cut anyways, but time hasn't been on my side lately. It feels awesome though.

I picked up some really pretty yarn, and couldn't wait to get started using it, so I picked out a nice simple round ripple throw pattern that I've had forever. I've been wanting to make that for a while, and this pretty yellow and white variegated yarn just seemed to have this patterns name written all over it. I'll post pictures of it when/if I get it done!!!

I hope everybody had a great 4th of July weekend! Mine went fairly well. Frank had to work, but that's ok, we don't really do much of anything anyways. I just sort of kicked back with the dogs, and watched people get hacked up on Lifetime Movie Network. (You know, Movies made for women, really are quite violent at times)

Well, hope everybody enjoys the rest of their weekend!!! Be safe, and if you've got to drink, please don't drive!!!
